چکیده

My comments address the Geostationary Interferometric Infrared Sounder (GIIRS) on Chinese FY-4A satellite. It is first hyperspectral sounder in geostationary orbit. An impact study by Yin et al. (2021, https://doi.org/10.1029/2021GL093672) of GIIRS data forecasting typhoon (Maria 2018) shows beneficial results. provides temperature and humidity observations cloud-free areas with high vertical and, as a novelty, temporal resolution (as short 15 min) over limited area. The development was long preceded international plans it will be followed other sounders covering ring. major step toward an improved global space-based observing system enabling better forecasts evolution severe convective weather.

Trade-off studies of a hyperspectral infrared sounder on a geostationary satellite.

Trade-off studies on spectral coverage, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and spectral resolution for a hyperspectral infrared (IR) sounder on a geostationary satellite are summarized. The data density method is applied for the vertical resolution analysis, and the rms error between true and retrieved profiles is used to represent the retrieval accuracy. The effects of spectral coverage, SNR, and sp...

A Geostationary Microwave Sounder for NASA and NOAA

The Precipitation and All-weather Temperature and Humidity (PATH) mission is one of 15 Earth space missions that the U.S. National Research Council recently recommended that NASA undertake in the next decade. The PATH mission will place a microwave atmospheric sounder, operating in the same temperature and water vapor bands used by the low-earth-orbiting Advanced Microwave Sounding Units (AMSU)...

One year in orbit of the first Geostationary Ocean Colour Imager (GOCI)

Geostationary Ocean Colour Imager (GOCI) is the first Ocean Colour Imager to operate from a Geostationary Orbit. It was developed by Astrium SAS under KARI contract in about 3 years between mid 2005 and October 2008 and integrated on-board COMS satellite end 2008 aside the COMS Meteo Imager (MI). COMS satellite was launched in June 2010 and the in-orbit commissioning tests were completed in beg...

GeoSTAR - A New Approach for a Geostationary Microwave Sounder

The Geostationary Synthetic Thinned Aperture Radiometer (GeoSTAR) is a microwave atmospheric sounder, with capabilities similar to those of the AMSU-A/B system, and is intended for deployment in geostationary orbit – where it will complement future infrared sounders t o enable all-weather temperature and humidity soundings. It also has the capability of mapping rain rates, and it can be deploye...

GeoSTAR - A Synthetic Aperture Microwave Sounder for Geostationary Missions

The Geostationary Synthetic Thinned Aperture Radiometer (GeoSTAR) is a new microwave atmospheric sounder under development. It will bring capabilities similar to those now available on low-earth orbiting environmental satellites to geostationary orbit where such capabilities have not been available. GeoSTAR will synthesize the multimeter aperture needed to achieve the required spatial resolutio...
